Corey Brewer: 'Happy to be on a winner'
Corey Brewer will suit up in his No. 13 Mavericks jersey for Friday night's game against the Pacers.
That doesn't necessarily mean that Brewer will make his Dallas debut a day after signing a three-year deal with the Mavs. Tyson Chandler's sprained ankle opens up a spot on the active roster.
However, coach Rick Carlisle didn't rule out using Brewer as a situational defender against the Pacers. Don't be surprised if Brewer spends a possession or two harassing Indiana star Danny Granger.
"If we get a defensive situation where he can help us, we’ll put him in there," Carlisle said.
Brewer still has a lot of work to do to learn the Mavericks' schemes. He had a teaching session with the coaching staff after signing Thursday afternoon and went through the morning shootaround.
But the slender 6-foot-8 swingman clearly understands his role, even though he doesn't know how many minutes he'll get.
"Just bring energy, come off the bench and play hard," said Brewer, who believes he has plenty of potential to develop but is primarily concerned on his fit this season. "I can help defensively and guard people. That’s what I do."
"You always want to be a winner," Brewer said. "Once you taste winning, you want to keep winning. I haven’t won since I got in the NBA. I’m happy to be on a winner."
