Curry: Relationship with Ellis 'has gotten a lot better'

Warriors guard Stephen Curry is back in Charlotte, taking classes at Davidson College. But on Thursday, he did an interview with 95.7-The Game and talked about a subject that always interests Warriors fans: His relationship with backcourt mate Monta Ellis.

Curry was asked whether he thought the Warriors were going to have to trade Ellis in order to get a big man.

“No,” Curry responded. “I think he’s happy where he’s at. We want him on our squad. He brings so much to the table from a leadership standpoint. He’s had some things going on with the front office with the Warriors, but all that’s cleared up now.

“From talking to him over the summer as well as David Lee and Dorell Wright, our core guys, we’re all on the same page in terms of what we have to do to get better. And Monta is a part of that. But we definitely need to get bigger on our front line.”

From the day Curry arrived in Golden State, his relationship with Ellis has been scrutinized. Of course it has. Who can forget media day 2009, when Ellis was asked if he could see himself playing alongside Curry?

“Us together?” Ellis said. “No. … Can’t. We just can’t.”

Well, they have for the past two years. While their individual numbers have been good, there are still legitimate doubts as to whether their pairing will work long-term and whether the Warriors can win consistently with that smallish backcourt.

“It’s gotten a lot better from Day 1, but that’s to be expected when you have two guys about the same size,” Curry said. “We play differently. Me being the point guard and trying to lead the offense and him playing his brand of basketball.

“He attacks the lanes very well when he has the ball in his hands. If he’s not getting to the basket he can make plays. There’s a balance we have learning how to play together. When I don’t have the ball in my hands he knows I’m pretty good coming off screens.

“We kind of work off of each other. There’s a good, unspoken chemistry when he’s out there and it’s only going to get better with time.”
