Haslem has setback
The Miami Heat enters the season’s final week uncertain if it will have Dwyane Wade for its next game, uncertain about its playoff seeding or first-round opponent, and increasingly uncertain if Udonis Haslem will be able to contribute anything meaningful in the playoffs.
Haslem was unable to practice Tuesday because of discomfort in the foot that he injured in November. It’s unlikely he will be ready to start the playoffs, and his availability beyond that remains in question.
“Too early to say,” coach Erik Spoelstra said when asked if Haslem can make a meaningful contribution in the postseason. “He’s a little sore from the road trip. He did a lot more work during the road trip than he did the week before.
“I’m not being coy about it. None of us know at this point, until he’s able to go full speed, running, cutting, side to side and contact work. And how his foot responds to that, we won’t know. We’re still a ways from that.”
On March 29, Spoelstra said, “We’ll have to see how the next month goes and then re-evaluate.” The first round of the playoffs begins April 16.
“Getting U.D. back would be a bonus,” Wade said. “With that injury, you can’t rush it. Just seeing him get healthy is all we care out. Of course we need him. But at the same time, we improvise. It’s a tough position for him to be in. It’s not [something] you can come back and mess around with.”
Haslem originally targeted a late-March return, but the Heat’s timetable was always more conservative.
Haslem, who was not available for comment Tuesday, previously said Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown – who had the same type of Lisfranc foot injury – warned him to expect stiffness during the recovery. The soreness isn’t a surprise, either.
