A key day is approaching for Magic's Malik Allen
A critical deadline is approaching for Orlando Magic reserve big man Malik Allen.
Allen's one-year contract becomes guaranteed for the rest of the season if he remains on the roster through Dec. 15, said Magic President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith.
Lots of money is at stake.
Allen's deal is believed to be worth $1.35 million.
For the Magic, it's not quite that costly. The current collective bargaining agreement creates an incentive for teams to agree to one-year contracts with veterans who have three or more years of service time. In Allen's case, the league would reimburse the Magic almost $500,000 of Allen's salary if his contract becomes guaranteed.
"I love the team and the direction they're going in," Allen said.
Smith said no decision has been made about Allen's future. When pressed, Smith said "probably the likelihood is pretty good" that Allen will remain with the team beyond Dec. 15.
Allen's biggest role so far this season has been in practice, where his presence occasionally allows centers Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat to rest. Allen is considered a consummate professional, and coach Stan Van Gundy has said he could depend on Allen if an injury arises and forces Allen to play big minutes.
