Lawal out for season
Suns rookie power forward Gani Lawal will need season-ending surgery on his right knee after an injury he suffered in practice Thursday.
Lawal said he hurt the knee when he was planted and getting ready to jump during practice. He left the arena on crutches and a MRI exam later revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a partially torn medial collateral ligament. Lawal, 22, said he had never suffered a knee injury previously.
Lawal made his NBA debut Friday night when he played the final two minutes of the Suns' home win against Detroit. He had been inactive most of the season and served a D-League assignment with Iowa.
Lawal, the 46th pick in the June draft, will wait for his knee swelling to subside over the next week or two before having surgery.
