Memphis Grizzlies ship Vasquez to Hornets for Pondexter
The Grizzlies traded backup point guard Greivis Vasquez to the New Orleans Hornets today and acquired forward Quincy Pondexter.
By adding Pondexter, the Griz believe they now have a true small forward to play behind starter Rudy Gay. Pondexter, 6-6, is entering his second NBA season. He’s an energy player with adequate offensive ability, good defensive instincts and a willingness to rebound.
Pondexter had 14 points, 12 rebounds and two steals against the Griz last Wednesday during a preseason victory for the Hornets. He appeared in 66 games and started six for the Hornets last season.
The Griz jettisoned Vasquez in part because free agent Jeremy Pargo emerged as a more suitable backup to starting point guard Mike Conley. Pargo is viewed as a better defensive player with more maturity and explosiveness on offense.
