Memphis Grizzlies to sign former Tiger Rodney Carney to 10-day contract
The Griz have agreed to sign former University of Memphis star Rodney Carney to a 10-day contract. Carney, 26, will join the team Monday in Denver, where the Griz will face the Nuggets on Tuesday in their first game following the NBA's All-Star Weekend.
Carney, a 6-7 small forward, last played for the Golden State Warriors. He was waived Jan. 4 and has since worked out in Indianapolis and Los Angeles. Carney will be available in five games -- Denver, Minnesota, Sacramento and San Antonio (home and away) -- before the Griz must decide whether to offer a second 10-day deal.
Carney's youth, size, 3-point shooting and defense are reasons the Griz considered him the best option as a stopgap at small forward. Gay's partially dislocated left shoulder will be re-evaluated in four weeks, but there are no guarantees that the Grizzlies' second-leading scorer will return this season.
