Michigan Men’s Basketball Has Three Sons of N.B.A. Players
At first glance, the Michigan men’s basketball roster calls to mind an N.B.A. starting lineup: Dumars, Horford and Hardaway, with an agent (Bartelstein) thrown in for good measure.
The famous last names do belong to good players, but in this case, to the sons of the men who made them famous. Having Jordan Dumars, Jon Horford, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Josh Bartelstein clustered on the same team creates instant star power in the crowd, where the former N.B.A. players Joe Dumars, Tito Horford and Tim Hardaway Sr. look on, along with the successful agent Mark Bartelstein. None of them planned this gathering, but they do share a lot to talk about.
“Their lives are different than Joe and me; they grew up with a silver spoon in their mouths,” Tim Hardaway Sr. said, referring to Jordan’s father, Joe Dumars. “We grew up scratching and clawing, trying to get out into a better situation. We were nothing until we made it through our hard work. What we instilled in our kids is a work ethic.
“They know basketball owes them nothing.”
It has already, however, provided them a lot. Tim Hardaway Jr., a slick, sharpshooting guard, grew up in the mold of his father. Jon Horford is not only Tito’s son but is also the younger brother of the Atlanta Hawks star Al Horford.
