Nets, Blazers talking about Devin Harris deal
They have been unhappy with Devin Harris’ level of play and commitment to the team lately and are trying to move him, with Portland a possible destination.
The Nets and Blazers have exchanged trade proposals and still are discussing a deal. Harris and veteran point guard Andre Miller are the main pieces, but more players are involved, multiple NBA sources said.
It’s doubtful the Nets will trade Harris, who turns 28 in two weeks, straight up for Miller, who turns 35 next month.
The Nets want to expand the trade and are trying to include disappointing free-agent signing Travis Outlaw, who began his career in Portland. The Blazers are interested in shooting guard Anthony Morrow.
Portland’s backup shooting guard Rudy Fernandez has been discussed, a source said. The Nets have talked about adding another big man so Joel Przybilla and his expiring contract also may be involved.
But a Blazers executive has scouted some recent Nets’ home and road games. The teams don’t play again this season, so the executive has been watching and gathering information on Nets’ players.
The Blazers organization always has been interested in Harris even when he was playing for Dallas.
Earlier this season, the Blazers talked to Denver about acquiring Harris if he was sent there in an Anthony trade.
There is a growing belief within the Nets that Harris’ inclusion in the Anthony discussions has taken its toll on him and he’s not as committed to the organization or coach Avery Johnson, who was in Dallas when Harris was traded to New Jersey for Jason Kidd.
“It has affected him and that has affected the team,” one source said.
The Nets would like to move Outlaw’s contract. He has $28 million over four years left on his deal. The Nets may be willing to include a draft pick to get something done.
Only Fernandez is signed fully through next season for $2.1 million. Miller’s $7.8 million is partially guaranteed.
Troy Murphy’s expiring contract has come up with Portland, but the Nets are talking to numerous teams about him. They are confident they can trade Murphy.
