Once a forgotten man, Daniel Gibson is reveling in Byron Scott's training camp for Cleveland Cavaliers
Daniel Gibson approached the media on Sunday after a short two-hour practice that Cavaliers coach Byron Scott likened to a day off. Gibson was asked what time practice started.
"Eleven o'clock," he said. "It's probably what, 4 or 5 now? You lose track of time. I thought it was going to be dark outside."
He laughed then, a sound that has been all too rare in recent seasons as he dealt with an assortment of injuries and an uncertain spot in coach Mike Brown's rotation.
But with a new coach and a new up-tempo offense, Gibson -- always a fan favorite who received the loudest cheers at Friday's scrimmage at the University of Akron -- is viewing this season as a chance for a fresh start.
"I'm looking forward to the opportunity," said Gibson, who loves the new offense. "I hope that's how it goes. The only way that can happen is if I come in here every day and continue to work at it, continue to show coach that I can be a consistent contributor on this basketball team. Hopefully, I can keep doing it."
Being completely healthy is a big reason why this is turning into his best training camp.
"A lot of my summers since I've been in the NBA have been used to recover from an injury -- whether it be the shoulder, the ankle, the toe," Gibson said. "But this summer I had the opportunity to get in with somebody individually and work on a lot of things basketball-wise and strength-wise in individual workouts two times a day every day."
