Orlando Magic to exercise their 2011-12 option on Ryan Anderson today
The Orlando Magic will announce later this afternoon that they have exercised their 2011-12 option on power forward Ryan Anderson, a team official said.
The move should not surprise anyone.
First, Magic officials like Anderson. He already is a good outside shooter, especially for a 6-foot-10 forward, and he worked hard during the offseason to add strength and quickness and improve his conditioning.
Second, as the 21st overall pick in the 2008-09 draft, Anderson’s contract and salary status is governed by the rookie scale outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
The Magic had until Nov. 1 to pick up Anderson’s option for 2011-12, and Magic President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith typically doesn’t like to wait right up until that deadline.
Anderson will earn $1,409,040 this season, which will be his third season in the NBA.
In 2011-12, he is scheduled to receive a 59.3 percent raise — again, something mandated by the CBA — and will earn $2,244,601.
Under the current CBA, Anderson would become a restricted free agent after the 2011-12 season as long as the Magic extend him a qualifying offer of $3,234,470 by June 30, 2012.
