Orlando Magic practice report: Duhon, J-Will vie for 2nd point guard spot

Orlando Magic don’t have many position battles to monitor over the weeks ahead, but one of them is for the backup point guard spot.

Over the next few weeks, Stan Van Gundy will determine whether newcomer Chris Duhon or Jason Williams will serve as Jameer Nelson’s backup.

“I know Jameer will start and then it’ll shake out,” Van Gundy said after the Magic completed their first practice today. ”I’m not worried about it. We have a couple of playing-time situations that we’ll sort out of the course of the month. But that’s better than not liking any of your answers. I’d rather have to choose between two options I like than two options [where] I don’t like either one.”

The Magic like Duhon’s potential on defense, his ability to run the pick-and-roll and his youth. The team likes Williams’ playmaking, locker-room presence and his playoff experience.

It seems that Duhon has the inside track on the role as Nelson’s backup. After all, the team committed lots more money and more years to Duhon.
