Orlando Magic waive Jason Williams
Reserve point guard Jason Williams was waived by the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. He did not make the trip to Indianapolis for the game against the Pacers on Wednesday.
Williams participated in the team's practice Tuesday at Amway Center, but with the impending return of big man Malik Allen from injury, Williams was slated to be taken off of the team's active list because the Magic would have had 13 healthy players and NBA teams are permitted to carry 12 players on their active roster.
When asked about Williams' status after the Magic's shootaround Wednesday at Conseco Fieldhouse, the team's president of basketball operations, Otis Smith, responded: "Well, he's not with the team. We'll deal with him when we get back to Orlando."
Under the league's collective bargaining agreement, because Williams signed a one-year deal, the Magic will be reimbursed by the league for any amount of his salary over $854,389.
Earlier in the day when asked if Williams asked for his release, Smith said, "Not so much in those terms. You say his 'release,' we're not into giving guys their release. He signed a contract to play basketball for the Orlando Magic, and we're expecting him to uphold his end of that deal."
