Rookie class leaves lot to be desired

As for the guy who was drafted second overall, well, there’s still some work to be done. That would be none other than Philadelphia guard Evan Turner, who has looked mostly unsure and been almost entirely ineffective. Or let’s just put it this way: Turner is coming off the bench behind Jodie Meeks, a second-rounder in '09 whom most people didn’t even expect to make the team.

That’s not intended to pick on Turner, but as one scout said, it shows that sometimes guys are drafted based on little more than Internet-generated hype.

“Anyone who saw (Turner) play in college had to know he wouldn’t really have a position in the NBA,” the scout said. “He’s not a great shooter, not a very good ball-handler, and he doesn’t really create anything for anyone else.”

“It’s probably too early to say that for sure,” said the aforementioned scout. “But when the best rookie was actually drafted in 2009 (Griffin) and the second- or third-best was taken in the second round (Fields), it may be time to take a hard look at how we’re developing players in this country. Because right now, this past draft stinks, and the next one may not be much better.”
