Warriors eye Nene
Jerry West, newest Warriors board member, said Monday night that, as far as he knew, there was nothing much to the ESPN report about discussions to send Monta Ellis to Philadelphia for Andre Iguodala.
But West also didn’t slam the report very hard.
“Monta Ellis is going to be mentioned everywhere because everyone loves him as a player,” West said. “But it’s not to the point where (the Warriors’ front office is) shopping anybody. They’ll concentrate on the draft, get to that part of it and then try to look to the future.”
Point of fact: The Warriors are surveying the market for Ellis, there are interested teams, and many NBA executives believe it’s mainly a matter of time before Ellis is dealt for a bigger player.
It’s hardly breaking news, but the Warriors seem to be narrowing down their draft and free-agent or trade targets fairly quickly.
In the June 23 draft, several sources say that West is looking at Washington State big guard Klay Thompson with the Warriors’ 11th overall pick.
And, as has been speculated for months, Denver center Nene — who can opt out and become a free agent this summer, if there isn’t a long lockout — remains at the top of the Warriors’ wish list.
